Measuring before furniture arrives

Valencia railings vary from slim metal bars on Eixample façades to thick masonry on older stacks. We record clear depth from wall to rail, door clearances, and any AC condenser that steals floor area.

Those numbers decide whether a two-seat bench or a single lounge chair fits without forcing a sideways shuffle every time someone brings coffee outside.

Zoning sit, grow, and store

Most flats need three pockets: a sit zone for morning or evening use, a grow strip along the brightest rail, and a slim store for cushions and tools. Mixing all three into one heap makes the ledge feel smaller than it is.

On deep L-shaped balconies we sometimes mirror indoor rooms — dining near the kitchen door, reading chair toward quieter sightlines — so movement feels familiar rather than improvised.

Narrow ledges on tiled blocks reward vertical planting and foldable chairs. Watch west sun after 16:00; pale decking and light textiles stay cooler than dark resin.

El Carmen

Irregular courtyard balconies face mixed orientations. Privacy screens need community approval more often here; we propose removable solutions first.

Benimaclet

Quieter residential stacks allow longer outdoor dinners. Check elevator cabin size before ordering a stone table — many buildings stop at 80 cm depth.

Field checklist

  1. Photograph railing type, floor slope, and downstairs ceiling from your ledge.
  2. Note which hours the sun hits the sitting wall versus the rail.
  3. Measure door swing and the path to the kitchen or living room.
  4. List fixed obstacles: AC units, downpipes, satellite brackets, gas meters.
  5. Confirm building rules on floor weight, drilling, and temporary screens.
  6. Decide primary use: breakfast for two, evening drinks, or plant care.

When wind rewrites the plan

North-easterly gusts along open corridors can lift unweighted textiles and tip tall pots. We keep high mass low, strap planters to rails where permitted, and choose chairs with open backs that shed air rather than catch it.

If your balcony faces a street canyon, we test a temporary chair placement for a week before locking the drawing — neighbours’ feedback on sightlines often improves the final arrangement.
